She is active in the community having served as PTA President of a local elementary school,
on the board of the Salt Lake Mothers of Twins, as a district round-table trainer with the Cub Scouts, as a volunteer for Sidelines (a support network for Women on bed rest during pregnancy) and she and her husband are active in the LDS Church.

This Single Image Stereogram was done at the 100 year anniversary of the building's completion.
"And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer,
who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea,
his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to
drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation,
a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."
One of my middle school age sons rates his school day on how many of certain words he hears on a given day. The less he hears, the better he rates his day. As he hops in the van for his ride home from school he gives me his tally for the day. On particularly bad days he is near tears as he tells me the tally for the day.
My niece, who is the same age, complains to me that the words spoken while she stands at her locker make her ears hurt.
My oldest son was given an assignment in his high school English class to read a certain book. Within this book appeared many of these same words. He told the teacher he would not read the rest of the book. It caused no small stir with the teacher. Even with the threat of a failing grade he held his ground. Eventually, with the help of the administration's involvement was able to get another book assigned to him and then transfered out after the end of that term.
Another son was given an assignment to read a book that contained different sort of words, but equally offensive. These words were racial slurs. It was an historical book that looked at the civil rights movement in the United States. Yet, my son still refused to read it, even after we explained the context of the words.
What is it about these words that bring such a response? Words are just words...or are they?
What is it about certain words that makes them so offensive?
They are words that carry very unpleasant meanings and messages. But it is beyond merely being unpleasant. There are many things we say that carry such meanings yet they are not considered swearing, cursing, vulgar or profain.
1: Has an emotional impact
People learning a new language often learn its swearwords first or learn and use swearwords from a variety of languages. Anyone who learns through immersion rather than in a classroom tends to use more swearwords and colloquialisms. People who speak more than one language often use swearwords from different languages, but feel that the words from their primary language have the most emotional impact. For this reason, some multilingual speakers will switch to a second language to express taboo subjects. How Swearing Works
2: Is considered by some to be unfit for polite conversation
The degree to which a profanity is offensive relies upon how the use of the word affects an individual. Some will consider the original meaning of a word (for example, the sexual act) to be offensive or a subject not fit for polite conversation while others will have no objection to these subject matters. Some will feel that certain words, having an established social taboo are simply offensive, regardless of any context; others will find profanities offensive mainly when used in a way deliberately intended to offend. Wikipedia
3: Is considered blasphemous
Profanities may cause offense, regardless of context, if they have some religious meaning which may cause their use to offend those who follow a particular religion. The original meaning of the term was restricted to blasphemy, sacrilege or saying the Abrahamic God's name (or an identifier such as Lord or God) in vain, such as "Jesus Christ, that was close!". Such religious profanity is referred to as blasphemy. Wikipedia
These are just a few of the examples of why such words are considered taboo and why they elicit such responses like those I have listed..
A couple months ago we found ourselves the proud owners of a cute little kitten. We learned, from the people who gave us the kitty that she was female.
Well, today we took "Bessie" to the Vet to get fixed...
....
....
We found out later that this cute little girl kitty was, in fact, a male.
!!!!!!!!
Okay, so we didn't check the parts very carefully.
Next time we won't believe what the previous owners tell us.
Scenes from the Utah Scottish Festival--June 14, 2008. I went with my mom and her parents to this festival last week. My grandpa's parents were born in the same small town in Scotland, but didn't meet until he came to visit his brother in Canada. My great grandmother was working as a nanny for my great grandpa's brother.
I stumbled upon this picture I took back when the Olympics came to Utah in 2002. This is the Olympic Stadium (aka University of Utah Rice Eccles Stadium). I spent a LOT of time on that campus as I was a student there for a few years.
My hubby and I were attending the Para-Olympic's closing ceremonies when I snapped this image.
Interesting side note: It hadn't snowed for weeks before those Olympics. Then the night before the Opening ceremonies Salt Lake City got a really nice snow storm that set the mood for the entire Olympics.
My dear schweetie sent this in a group email this morning. I told him it was begging to be used in a blog. So, I took matters into my own hands.
"On the way to work today I heard "Amazing Grace" sung to the tune "House of the Rising Sun." Do you know what this means? Based on the usual method of getting a song unstuck from your head (singing Gilligan's Island to Amazing Grace's tune or vice versa) you can now add House of the Rising Sun into the mix.
"Between the three originals and the now TWO alternate tunes for each, you have a total of 9 combinations, six of which can purge any normal song from your mind with ease! (I make no claim about the emotional scarring caused by singing Gilligan's Island to House of the Rising Sun.) I knew those combinatorics math classes from college would come in handy some day."
This is another one of those personality tests. Some have attributed it to Dr. Phil. That is not true. However, I found it rather telling. Some of my friends would agree. I wrote my responses on a piece of paper and then at the bottom I looked to see what score each response gave. My score was 37.
31 TO 40 POINTS : Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful and practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.
Here is the test. Let me know what you got.

OVER 60 POINTS : Others see you as someone they should 'handle with care.' You're seen as vain, self-centered, and who is extremely dominant. Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.
51 T 60 POINTS : Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.
41 TO 50 POINTS : Others see you as fresh, live ly, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting; someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding; someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.
31 TO 40 POINTS : Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical.
21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder. It would really surprise t hem if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then , usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.
UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions & who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you' re boring. Only those who know you well know that you aren't.
In May 2005 I launched the Paperclippings blog. I have had a website by the same name since 2003 or there about. Over the last 2 1/2 years I have had some favorite entries. These posts are MY favorite entries. These are not in any particular order.
I have other favorites, but decided to keep it to 10.
Below is the top ten most popular posts from this blog. These are posts that have brought the most comments. These are in order. Ya, so you can see just how few people come to my humble abode.
As Thanksgiving Day came to a close I sat to reflect on the day. I have much to be thankful for. I have a wonderful family, including the best hubby in the world (ok, the rest of you will just have to settle for less...LOL...ok, so he's wonderful, at any rate.) I have great neighbors. I have some pretty good friends....dang good friends, I tell ya.
I give thanks to God for all those things and all else He has given me.
...but most of all I give thanks to the turkey who gave its all for the betterment of my tummy.
Some things said around the table yesterday:
"This sure is a fowl day!"
"Let's talk turkey."
"How about we talk Greece, instead."
"You sure have a fowl mouth."
On the more serious side
:
We talked of Happiness, Gratitude, Hope and Faith.
Why teenagers shouldn't be allowed to trick or treat ;)
My youngest teenager still likes to go out trick or treating. He is on that fence between wanting to be a kid and wanting to be grown up. His costume was a bedraggled-hair wig...period. He carried a small cooler with the strap around his neck. Rather than say, "Trick or Treat." His plan was to say, "donations!!?, donations!!?"
We let him go out anyway because he was taking a couple of the younger boys with him.
...at least he didn't come back with a pillow case full of candy like some of our other kids.
Awhile back I posted an entry about the moat in our backyard. Well, we have progressed with that project. We are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel on this one. My husband will finally be able to stretch out his power tools and make things without bumping into walls.
A few days ago I blogged about a cute little kitten that some friends of mine had rescued.
Then, a few days later, in a blog post "Darwin Scores a Near Miss" by a friend of mine I added a comment about a dog owned by another friend.
Here's another one for you. We have some friends who have a dog...a big dog. I am not a very big fan of dogs, but this one is an exception.
Every week three weeks we meet at their house (we actually rotate which house to be at for Saturday night game night.) So, every three weeks this dog gets to see her people. I say HER people because she most definitely CLAIMS us.
She will actually get ahold of your hand and put it on her belly to be rubbed. She doesn't pay much attention to my hubby because he is allergic to dogs and never pays much attention to the dog.
BUT, IF you pay any attention to her she will be your best friend...at least it seems that way. At least one thing can be said for this dog. She has won MY heart.
Well, the dog (Maya) and the kitten (Miles) met face to face Saturday night. Maya is a rather big dog. Miles is only 4 weeks old.
The friends who are taking care of the kitten brought it with them to our regular Saturday night "game" night. As the kitten was being passed from one adult to another (we still can't get enough of this kitten) Maya noticed this little creature. She knew she had seen the kitten but failed to see who ended up with it.
Maya began doing circles about the room trying to locate it. After a few minutes of this she finally located the kitten. Her jaw began to chomp uncontrollably at the thought of having that kitten in her mouth.
After some calm discussion with the dog she was convinced, to a degree, to just sniff the kitten rather than eat it. She trembled as she sat there with her nose to the kitten (with an adult guarding it.)
All was fine until my friend, who owns the dog, held the kitten. Oh, Maya just couldn't deal with this. She acted as if she had been betrayed. She whined and did more circles about the room.
She finally had to be put in another room to keep the kitten safe. Poor, poor Maya.
I found out today that I am a spammer. I kid you not.
Here's what happened. I have been a member of a yahoo group for a little over two years now. The group was set up to allow a group of friends who like to play online games together to keep up on when they were going to be on and share and share alike. It has since turned into the email that keeps this group of friends in contact with one another.
Well, two weeks ago, I sent an email like I have for months and months. But this time it never got through. After a couple more emails I realized that there was a problem. I could get messsages from the group but I could not send to the group unless I went directly through the web interface.
!!!!
After two weeks of doing things the hard way I decided to do some trouble shooting. I even deleted my membership and asked to be reinstated to see if that would fix the problem. NADA!!
So, finally, I pinged the owner. After about 5-10 minutes he found the problem. I was being caught by its spam filters. SPAM!!! Me??? A spammer??? Okay, so maybe I like to talk/write/chat...A LOT, but spam??? I hadn't even emailed that group as often as some of the others. But alas...
My friend, the owner, approved my emails. I sent a new one and still I couldn't get through.
Back to the trouble shooting blackboard! AGAIN!
Final NOTE: the spam filter has been deleted and I am back among the friends and muchas gracias to my friend who took time out of his work day to help fix the problem.
When I was a sophomore in high school my English teacher would post a quote at the top of the chalkboard each day. She rarely told us who coined it and they were usually not more than a one-liner. From the very first day I started writing them down in a notebook I carried with me. Since I didn't miss a day of school that year I got every quote she put up.
There was one day, however, that this teacher was late to class and had failed to get a quote up on the board. The class took it upon themselves to find a quote and post it in the designated location.
Here is a selection of some of my favorites from that year.
1-God's last name is not Dammit.
2-He who throws mud will also get dirty.
3-Keep your words soft and sweet in case you have to eat them later.
4-There are dozens of rules to success, but none of them work unless you do.
5-Failure is the path of least persistence.
6-The door to success is labeled push.
7-A friend is a present you give yourself.
8-The battle of the sexes will never be won by either side. There's too much fraternizing with the enemy.
9-What you don't know may not hurt you, but it will certainly amuse a lot of us.
10-To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist. ---Oscar Wilde
11-Stretching the truth won't make it any stronger.
12-Astronomy is over your head. --Dave Thomas
13-Geometry is easy as Pi. --Tim Walters.
14-Bumper Sticker: "Support the crisis of your choice.
15-I value the friend who for me finds time on his calendar, but I cherish the friend who for me does not consult his calendar.
16-Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
17-When I see you my stomach gets all over and over excited. Nothing much happens in my head, or that I can feel in my heart--maybe, my stomach is in love with you.
18-Love is a feeling you feel when you feel you are feeling a feeling you feel you have never felt before.
19-Life is fragile--handle with prayer.
20-Every man goes down to his grave bearing in his hands only that which he has given away.
21-If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.
22-A friend is one who knows all about you and loves you just the same.
I was tapped by J~ over at Eeps, Meeps and Ipes for the "Blog Apocalypse" meme. It was started by UrbanMonk, who is donating to charity based upon the participation.
"Now there's a reason to do participate in the meme!Anyway, it goes like this: We're gonna pretend the entire Blogosphere is coming to an end! You have the opportunity to make one last post. A chance to summarize your blog, leave people with one last gem, whatever. What do you say?"
Well, My blog is a mixture many things. It is called Paperclippings after all. Mostly it is an outlet for things that are on my mind. Sometimes others are interested in what I say. Other times they could care less. That does not matter. This is my outlet. I do, however, appreciate those who stop to comment and visit.
For more than 19 years my parents have had a cat by the name of Velcro. Velcro got its name because it would stick to us like "velcro" and made the sound of it when we pulled him off.
Velcro was born in 1987. We cannot remember exactly when he was born, but we know that it was between summer of 1987 and Thanksgiving of the same year.
Velcro died today, April 23, 2007. He had lived longer than any other cat they had owned and his health was deteriorating to the point that the only humane thing to do was to have him put to sleep.
Velcro was an interesting cat.
In his younger days he would make himself "available" to the grandkids in exchange for the good cat food.
One of his favorite places to perch was on my sister's head--or anyone's head--but hers was his favorite. He loved to run his paws through human hair.
Velcro sat on my son's head one day watching him eat a bowl of cereal.
He had learned to say "Hello." It was sort of a "yewo."
In his later years he thought he was on an equal with my youngest brother of about the same age. In fact my brother is just slightly younger than this cat. Velcro and my brother had a rather interesting sibling rivalry. My brother would complain that the cat would not stay out of his room. "Mom," he would say, "would you tell Velcro to stay out of my room while I am at school." In turn, Velcro would sneak into the room any chance he got, just because he could.
I am sure there are many stories that will be told about this cat for years to come. He will be missed.
Okay, so I like to take the occasional silly quiz. This one perked my interest because I like to play Dungeons and Dragons. In this game it is very important to know ones alignment--not talking about tire alignment here.
You scored as Lawful Good. A lawful good person acts as a good person is expected or required to act. They are dedicated to upholding both what is right and what is set down in law.
I was looking for a little light, comic relief, sort of thing today and found this little pass-a-long quiz. I have always said that I am a Realist. I can be optimistic if the situation calls for it. But I also see the down side of things with open eyes.
For those who have seen my website you might recognize the new look for my blog. I have integrated them to have the same look. I figured out how to do this while helping a friend redo the look for her blog.
I found this fun little personality quiz on the blog of a friend.
Looks like my results were about the same as his. I still need to figure out what Black and Red people are like so I can avoid them or learn to block them.
